From November 2024, Canada is overhauling its work permit rules in order to further align immigration to crucial labor requirements. Here’s a summary:
Why the Change?
In light of the increase in demand for the foreign workforce, Canada wants to: Give first priority to sectors in need, such as healthcare, technology, and skilled trades Reduce dependence on low-wage foreign labor gradually, opening avenues for local residents in better ways
Key Changes
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
- Language Requirement: Candidates must possess CLB 7 (English) and NCLC 7 (French).
- Field of Study: PGWPs will henceforth give priority to those graduating in high-demand fields, such as health-care and STEM.
- Spousal Open Work Permits (SOWP)
- Sector Restrictions: Dependents of only key sectors, for example health care and construction, can avail of the facility.
- Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) Low-Wage Cap: Only 10% of low-wage positions with an employer may be filled with foreigners. Permit Duration: Low-wage positions are now acceptable for a year instead of two.
Preparing for Changes
- Students: Apply to programs in high-demand sectors and enhancement of language skills.
- Foreign Workers: Permits are expected to be issued at shorter lengths; it may be permissible to enter other sectors in demand.
- Employers: Work within a focused strategy to find employees who are residents, and become aware of your industry’s exceptions.
These changes have one aim in mind: creating a sustainable workforce for Canada’s future. Educate yourself and adjust!
