The Canadian government has announced an exciting update for international students: there is change of the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in which it can now be renewed to a two year validity. This extension will be important for students who have done their studies in Canada since it offers a chance for practicing work which is important for anyone intending to practice their career or get a visa to live in Canada.
Introduction of the post graduation work permit
Thus, the idea of so called Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) enables the graduated international students to legally work in Canada for a limited period of time. Previously the work permit as extended from eight months and up to three years, depending on the nature of the study program being achieved. As of recent, policy amendment allows them to renew their permit for up to two years as long as the student meets the specific requirement for eligibility.
Extension Eligibility Requirements
But to register for extension of the PPS numbers for another two years there are some conditions that have to be met. If you are currently in the country on a post-graduation work permit that is valid up to 2024, you may apply to renew or extend your work permit under the new policy. Commuters whose permits have had an authorize expiry date falling after May 7, 2024, can also apply for renewal.
Application process of PGWP extension
If you wish to extend your PGWP for an additional two years, follow these steps:
First, open enrolment criteria based on the new requirements to check whether you meet them. Certain documents and information must be attached on this application. This is the working permit, an official letter from your employer and other relevant document from your home country.
Then, go to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada’s (IRCC) office and apply to get a new open work permit under s 200 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. If your PGWP has already been expired, it is also necessary to apply the restoration of temporary resident status under section 182.
After you have filled this application, the IRCC will go through your information that you shared with them. If there are no concerns, work permit will be renewed and yield open work permit policy to work in Canada for two more years.
