On Thursday, the Central Govt announced an increase in minimum wage rates for workers. The wage rate was increased after the revision of the Variable Dearness Allowance(VDA). PIB officially stated that the wage rate would meet the rising cost of living for the workers.

The new wage rates will be implemented from 1st October 2024. The increment will affect labour from both agricultural and non-agriculture strata. The wage rate increment applies to workers from various sectors such as construction, housekeepers, cleaners, miners, agriculture, sweepers and loaders/unloaders, specifically those engaged in labour works.

The minimum wage rates are divided into different skill levels, such as highly skilled, skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled. Another basis on which wage rates are divided on the geographical area like A, B and C.

  • In the A-category, for unskilled workers including construction, sweeping, cleaning, loaders and unloaders will be Rs. 783/day i.e. Rs. 20,358/month. 
  • Under this, semi-skilled will get Rs.868/day i.e. Rs. 22,568/month. 
  • The workers who are skilled, clerical, watch & wards without arms will get Rs. 954 a day, i.e. Rs. 24,804 per month. 
  • For highly skilled the wages will be Rs. 1035 per day and Rs. 26,910 per month.

Importance of VDA

The Government of India twice revised the Variable Dearness Allowance to take necessary measures for the people who are influenced by it. The last time the VDA was revised was in April 2024. We can say the government revises the VDA and make decisions every 1 April and 1st of October.

The aim of providing the VDA is to make sure that the workers get fair compensation and can afford the cost of living due to economic dynamic changes and inflation rates are soaring up. The government also focuses on improving the labour conditions in India.
