Good News for Haryana’s Sanitation Workers

Pay Increase for Sanitation Workers The state of Haryana has become one of the firsts in India to award a raise to its workforce of sanitation workers with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini making the announcement. Sanitation workers will receive an increase of 9,000 to 10,000 rupees in their salary from the new year onwards. They are paid about 16,000 to 17,000 rupees per month at the moment, and after this raise, they will be paid 26,000 rupees per month.

Other advantages for sanitation workers

In addition to the salary structure, the Chief Minister revealed that sanitation workers will also be given an allowance in cases of their accidents or death on the line of duty. In case a worker dies while in the course of their work, a compensation of five lakh rupees will be given.

Sewerage system workers shall receive ten lakh rupees in case of an accident under the provision of the bill. In addition, 50 percent of cleaning contracts in the state will go to sanitation workers directly, or through their organizations.

Establishing a state commission for sanitation workers

For greater focus on better living and working conditions of the sanitation workers, Haryana government has formed Haryana State Sanitation Employees Commission. This will enhance their rights and welfare issues. Also, more than 5000 agency employees would be taken into the municipal workforce for better benefits.

Scheduled Caste Quota

The Chief Minister also revealed a special reservation provision. The 20% overall reserved quota for government services will comprise 10% of Scheduled Castes candidates. If suitable candidates from the Scheduled Castes are not available then the rest of the positions will be filled from other similarly categorized candidates.This scheme is evidence of the sincerity of the Haryana government to bring improvement to the lives of sanitation workers.
