8th Pay Commission: Big Update for Central Government Staff!

There will be a next national council meeting next month. The National Council of the Joint Work Channel will sit in the next month to consider the 8th Pay Commission. This council plays the role of settling disputes between the government and its workers.

Some Certainty on Pay Commission

Government employee unions are expecting this meeting to provide directions on how to set up the NEW 8th Pay Commission. This prompted Shiv Gopal Mishra secretary of the staff side of NC-JCM to state this is the time they will seek answers from government.

Background and Submissions

The National Council has already presented two memorandums to the government to compel it to form the new pay commission. The first was awarded to Rajiv Gauba, the former Union Cabinet Secretary and the second, and to the present holder of the Union Cabinet Secretary post T.V. Somanathan.

Speculations and Statements

Some sources expected the government to introduce the 8th Pay Commission in the Union Budget 2024-25 but it was not to be. But, the current Union Finance Secretary T.V. Somanathan himself gave an indication that one can be made soon. He said that the 8th Pay Commission is effective from January 1, 2026 so there is ample time in preparing for the implementation of the pay structures.

Current Status

7th pay commission was formed in February 2014 and its implementation began from January 2016. Lately people are waiting for the next upgrade. Even more news might be awaited after the next month’s meeting of the JCM in order to know the latest that may affect the central government employees.
