Civil servants and pensioners are wondering when exactly they will be paid their next month’s salaries or pensions. At the moment, it is impossible to mention some important data regarding the exact date of the event. In an effort to clear the air on this, Treasury and Accounts Department has formally written to the Principal Finance Secretary to ask for timelines on when the payments will be made. Once this decision is made, the Treasury will prepare itself for such a change.
How the Salaries Are Paid
The Finance Department will consult the Chief Minister before releasing the salary and pension for the month under consideration. The Treasury Department will need to know how much money available in their account is so as to draw the payments will be made. Usually the government sets funds for the Treasury several times before releasing payments to its employees and pensioners.
Innovations in Payment Process
More recently the mode of salary and pension payment has been changed, thus the Treasury and the Accounts Department need to be aware of the release date. In previous months, there were known dates when payments had to be made, for example, on the first of a month, so the Treasury provided the necessary funds. But in the new arrangements, the officials have given some thoughts as to what should be done next.
That treasury wants to know at December whether funds are available for release of the payments. The government is expected to borrow another ₹500 crore because that is the remaining borrowing limit left for the year. Earlier in October, the government had borrowed ₹500 crore to deal with financial requirements.
What About the Date for December Payments?
Once the government was paying salaries earlier because of Diwali. For example, the pay for October was on the 28 because of many holidays that take place during November. Now there is talk that possibly wages may be given as early as December the 2nd but no confirmation as such has been made yet.
As to the part of the payment which will include pensions, the details of when people will be paid have not been agreed on yet. People are advised to wait for the word from the government on payment of salary and pension in December.
